ARTS 114 Introduction to 3D Design

Course Description: "A fundamental course with an emphasis on means of construction, analysis of materials and structural examinations that support conceptual development of 3 dimensional art."

Rationale: "Design professionals are continuously developing fundamental skills that will help them reach their creative goals. The successful designers are those that merge traditional skills with current technology, and those that are versatile in handling two and three dimensional media. Students will benefit from this course as they assess what methods, materials and elements work together to create successful three-dimensional works of art."

Line & Balance Project

Taking inspiration from an action photo of a swimming relay start, I created a line figure that focused on assymetrical balance. For this project I used 14 guage floral wire to create the figure and to fill it in to create "muscle" in the proper areas.

Plane to Mass Project

For this project, I created a 3-dimensional robot using only cardboard, hotglue, and posterboard for the base. I worked to create a figure that contrasted curvilinear and rectilinear planes as well as integrate texture through small details.

Pattern & Balance Project

For this project I made a clay bas-relief tile, I created a balanced design using reflection symmetry. I added texture and additional visual interest through multiple levels of depth in the clay. I carved the stems of the flowers into the tile, then added additional clay to build the flowers and petals.

Emphasis Through Contrast Project

For the final project of this class, all of the skills learned previously working with different mediums to create 3-dimensional designs were combined. I was inspired by the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den, specifically the Bible verse Daniel 6:22 : "My God sent His angel, and He shut the mouths of the lions..." I created a sculpture of an angel shutting the mouth of a lion, I contrasted the lion adn angel by putting emphasis on the angel through creating him significantly larger than the lion with large wings. Both the lion and the angel were created by starting with a wire base which then had foil added onto it to create the majority of the "muscle" and finally had clay added on top to create the realistic details.
